New Loss and Damage Report: Community Evidence from Coastal Bangladesh

CHRSD publishes 18 months of community-gathered data documenting non-economic losses in cyclone-affected areas.
Today CHRSD releases What We Lost, an 84-page report documenting non-economic loss and damage from Cyclone Remal and subsequent tidal flooding across Barguna, Patuakhali, and Bhola districts.
The report is the first of its kind to combine quantitative household surveys (2,340 households) with qualitative testimony (410 in-depth interviews), all gathered by CHRSD-trained community researchers over 18 months.
Key findings
- 62% of surveyed households report loss of ancestral land, culturally significant sites, or intergenerational livelihoods that they consider irreplaceable
- Women report 2.3x higher psychological distress scores than men in the six months following displacement
- Traditional ecological knowledge — species names, weather signs, agricultural calendars — is being lost as elders migrate away from ancestral areas
