Coastal Mangrove Restoration Passes 800-Hectare Milestone
The Coastal Mangrove Restoration project — a joint effort between CHRSD, 14 community forest management committees, and the Forest Department — has crossed 800 hectares of restored mangrove buffer across Barguna and Patuakhali.
The 800-hectare target was originally set for December 2026. Community forest committees, motivated by strong 2024 monsoon planting and the enthusiasm of newly-trained women stewards, hit the mark in June.
Survival rate at 24 months is 78% — above the 70% threshold set at the program's launch. Species planted include Sonneratia, Avicennia, and locally-favored Keora.
"The forest is not a project. It's a promise to our grandchildren," said Rahima Begum, chair of the Kalapara community forest committee.
